Fraudsters often target properties where there is no mortgage or where the owner lives elsewhere. They may attempt to acquire 'title' or ownership to a property either by using a forged document to transfer it into their own name, or by impersonating the owner.
The groups most at risk from property fraud are those who do not live in a property they own, for example, elderly people living in residential care, homeowners living abroad and buy-to-let landlords. One way to stop fraudsters is for homeowners to ensure that their contact details with the Land Registry are up-to-date. Information on how to do this can be found on the Land Registry website.
